Cavan and Steele Sullivan strongly believe Illinois sits in prime location to grow the poultry industry. The brothers have been hatching pheasants and gamebirds since the 1990s – initially as FFA and 4-H projects – and currently raise chickens, laying hens, turkeys, meat pheasants and flight-ready pheasants. And with growing demand for their birds, the Sullivans took a major step to grow their business and provide opportunities for other farmers to raise poultry in central Illinois when they opened their own USDA-inspected processing facility in Petersburg. The Sullivans also raise their own birds and doubled turkey production in the past year from 2,500 to 5,000, with more plans to expand. They also run a hatchery on their farm with the capacity to generate 22,000 egg sets. They currently produce between 10,000 and 15,000 egg sets during peak season. The Sullivans are currently looking to team up with other farmers to build a grower network for the operation.
