Behind the Scenes at the Fresh Picks Warehouse: Composting

Post By Irv Cernauskas
Feb. 17. 2019

It's a Monday morning at the Fresh Picks warehouse and the loading dock is full of grey bins awaiting their final destination at customer's doorsteps. One driver loads 7 full heavy bins into his truck. They may look like the same bins we send to our customers full of beautiful fresh local produce, but looks can be decieving. These bins are full of the food scraps that we can't use and they are being sent to a new home in the compost bin at Growing Power's Iron Street Farm...

Fresh Picks is comitted to sustainability, and that includes our waste. We recently became a Gold Partner in the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition's We Compost program whichrecognizes businesses who compost. To give you a better idea of how our food waste reduction processes work, we talked with IFSC and gave a behind the scenes look at composting at Fresh Picks. Head on over to the IFSC blog to check it out!

Irv's Response to "What Farm-to-Table Got Wrong"

Post By Fresh Picks

A recent article in the New York times written by Dan Barber addresses what he believes to be the reason why the local food movement has fallen short in catalyzing real change in the way the majority of our food is grown or raised. The piece is titled "What Farm-to-Table Got Wrong" and it got many of us around here thinking about that very question.
