Welcome to the first Fresh Picks Newsletter and to the start of the 2006 growing season! We are launching Irv & Shelly’s Fresh PicksSM and this newsletter to connect Chicago to our local farmers and build a healthy way to bring fresh local food to our tables. The farmers we have met with and whose amazing food we have tasted are excited to turn more acres to organic practices knowing we will help them get their ripe flavorful harvest to your door within hours of leaving the farm.

     Happy Spring!

Farmer Interview

It’s great to see young people excited about farming again! Marc and Abby Strobbe started Healthy Heritage Farm in Rock Falls, Illinois two years ago. We asked Marc to tell us more about the farm and why he’s a “beyond organic” farmer.

The Farm. Healthy Heritage Farm has 10-acres of land the Strobbe’s use to produce high quality heirloom and specialty vegetables, pastured poultry and free range eggs. They gain great satisfaction when people taste their first delicious free range egg or chicken and aim to more than double production this year to keep up with demand. They’ll have up to 100 laying chickens at any one time and do several 300-400 meat chicken batches.

Farm Practices. Not only is every substance used on the farm natural (no chemicals, hormones or antibiotics), but the Strobbe’s also work hard to farm in an environmentally sound, socially just and economically viable way. What does all this mean? For Marc, being a fourth generation farmer and former Peace Corps Volunteer teaching organic farming, these are core values. He and Abby believe that more direct connection between small sustainable farms and consumers is healthier for the environment, rural communities and all of us. Their goal is to leave the land in better shape than when they started.

Typical Farm Day.  Marc and Abby are up before dawn, of course! They plan the day (and week) in half or full day segments so they can work as efficiently as possible. The animals always get taken care of first. Then day segments will be allocated to jobs such as working with seedlings; weeding and mowing; harvesting, washing & packing; and marketing.

Marc’s Best of Farming.

  • Being outside in nature
  • Learning it all from Mother Nature
  • Sharing with people about farming
  • Being independent

We’ll be carrying the Strobbe’s delicious products at FreshPicks.com starting this May.
