As we start to feel the warmth of the spring sun, the seedlings on farms in our region are soaking up the rays and sprouting up from the earth. Many of the first seedlings are popping up out of the ground inside greenhouses (or hoop houses) where they are protected from potential frost that is present in the Midwest through May.
Mother Nature has been fairly kind so far this season, providing both rain and warmth for our farmers. The memory of last year’s drought and its resulting smaller harvests as well as a dry winter have most farmers thankful for every raindrop that helps them restore their soil moisture and nurture their crops. We will all wait to see what challenges and bounties the season brings.
Our local farmers are busy preparing their fields, equipment and work teams for more seedlings and transplanting. It is the satisfying work of plowing the fields and the resulting smells of freshly turned soil and sprouting greens that creates a growing excitement for the harvest to come. All the senses are used by organic farmers to ensure their harvested crops have the wonderful aroma, vivid color, crisp feel, satisfying crunch and delicious taste of perfectly ripe food!
